For years I wouldn’t smile in photos and had such a fear of even going to the dentist. Since seeing Dr Sana Shinki the anxiety has stopped and I can show my teeth again in photos.

Crown lengthening at a glance

A woman sitting in a dentist chair smiling.

Crown lengthening is a minor surgical procedure that removes some of the gum and possibly bone to expose more of your tooth. It’s used either for aesthetic reasons or to prepare the tooth for a crown or other restoration.

You might benefit from this procedure if your smile shows too much gum, or if you need to uncover more tooth structure for a restoration like a crown or bridge.

By removing excess gum tissue, we can reshape your gum line to reveal more tooth and create a more balanced appearance. It can make a big difference to how your smile looks overall.

In these cases, crown lengthening can allow access to the remaining healthy tooth so that we can fit a secure and lasting crown.

What happens during treatment?

What to expect from your crown lengthening appointment

Your dentist will begin with a consultation, reviewing your health history and taking X-rays and scans. The procedure itself is done under local anaesthetic to ensure your comfort.

Excess gum tissue is carefully removed, and in some cases, a small amount of bone is reshaped to allow access to the tooth. Once complete, the area is sutured and protected with a dressing. We’ll arrange a follow-up one to two weeks later to check healing.

We understand that dental procedures can feel daunting. Our team is here to support you throughout – we take the time to explain everything, go at your pace, and make sure you always feel in control. You’ll be met with kindness and reassurance from the moment you arrive.

Still have questions?

Frequently asked questions about crown lengthening in Wellingborough

Am I suitable for crown lengthening?

If your teeth appear short, or a tooth is damaged below the gum line, crown lengthening may be suitable. We’ll take a full clinical assessment and scans to confirm the best approach.

What’s the healing time?

Most patients heal within one to two weeks. You may have some swelling at first, but we’ll guide you through aftercare and follow up to make sure everything is healing as it should.

Will it change how my smile looks?

Yes – in a good way. Crown lengthening can reduce excess gum tissue and make your teeth appear longer and more in proportion, improving your smile’s overall look.
