Inlays and onlays at a glance

These are custom restorations used when a tooth is too damaged for a standard filling but doesn’t need a full crown. They offer a strong, natural-looking way to repair the tooth and restore function.

Both are lab-made inserts bonded to the tooth, usually crafted from porcelain, composite or metal.

Inlays fit within the grooves of the tooth

Onlays extend to cover one or more cusps of the tooth’s surface

Inlays sit neatly in the centre of the tooth and are used when the biting surface needs support.

Onlays cover a larger area and help protect weakened teeth from further damage by adding external strength.

What does the treatment involve?

Here’s what to expect during your inlay or onlay appointment

After numbing the area, we remove the damaged part of the tooth and take a detailed impression. This is sent to our trusted dental lab, or completed in-house if suitable, for precise fabrication.

At your second visit, we fit and bond the inlay or onlay securely, then polish it to ensure a smooth finish and natural feel.

Why regular check-ups matter

By catching wear and damage early, we can prevent small problems from becoming major ones. Our membership plans include check-ups and hygiene visits to help you maintain your dental health with ease.

Frequently asked questions about inlays and onlays in Wellingborough

How are inlays and onlays different to fillings?

Fillings are placed directly in the tooth, while inlays and onlays are crafted in a lab for a precise fit. They’re stronger and longer-lasting, making them ideal when there’s more extensive damage.

Are they long-lasting?

Yes. With good oral hygiene, inlays and onlays can last 10 to 15 years or more. They’re highly resistant to wear and staining.

Will they match my teeth?

Absolutely. We use high-quality materials and work with skilled labs to ensure a natural colour match and seamless finish.

How do I care for them?

Brush and floss regularly, attend routine check-ups and avoid chewing very hard objects like ice or pens. Let us know if you feel any changes.
