Dental hygiene at a glance

Protecting your teeth and gums with optimal dental hygiene is the most effective way to great, long-term oral health. Good dental hygiene is important to keep your mouth, teeth and gums healthy. Regular oral care at home and at the practice can reduce the risk of tooth decay, cavities and gum disease as well as maintaining your natural smile.

At the Wellingborough Dental & Implant Clinic, when it comes to looking after our patient’s teeth, we think that prevention is better than cure. Periodic in-practice care and regular hygienist appointments are a great way to keep your teeth and gums healthy as well as enhancing your smile. A dental check-up, every six months or so, allows your dentist to identify and treat early signs of tooth decay or damage.

Our dental hygiene appointments include a deep clean that removes plaque, tartar and bacteria—particularly in areas that brushing and flossing can’t reach.

Your hygienist will also offer personalised guidance to improve your at-home routine and help you care for your teeth between visits.

How can I look after my dental health between visits?

Your daily hygiene routine

Brushing twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and using a suitable mouthwash are key to maintaining your oral health between visits.

Changing your toothbrush every three months also helps ensure a thorough clean and limits bacterial build-up.

Are there lifestyle habits that can help my smile?

Making smart choices for oral health

Alongside good brushing and regular check-ups, small lifestyle changes can have a big impact on your teeth and gums. We recommend:

Eating a healthy, balanced diet

Avoiding sugary snacks and drinks

Quitting smoking or reducing tobacco use

Staying active for your general wellbeing

Still have questions?

Dental hygiene FAQs at Wellingborough Dental & Implant Clinic

What makes your hygiene appointments different?

We focus on comfort, clear advice and a personalised approach—helping you feel relaxed and in control throughout.

I feel nervous about hygiene appointments—can you help?

Absolutely. We’ll talk you through every step and take things at your pace, in a calm and welcoming setting.

Do hygiene visits include a health check?

Yes, each appointment includes a thorough look at your gums and teeth to catch early signs of any concerns.

Is hygiene treatment suitable for all ages?

Definitely. We provide gentle, effective care for patients of all ages—including children, adults and older patients.

Will a clean make my teeth look whiter?

A professional clean can lift staining caused by food, drink and smoking—so your teeth may look noticeably brighter. While it’s not the same as whitening, it’s a great starting point. We also offer teeth whitening for those looking for a more noticeable result.
