What good general dentistry actually looks like

There's a version of a dentist's appointment that most people carry around in their head from childhood. The cold room. The stern instruction not to eat sugar. The feeling of being told off for something you half-knew you were doing wrong. It's enough to put anyone off booking.

The thing is, that version doesn't have to be your reality. General dentistry, when it's done well, doesn't feel like a telling off. It feels like a conversation with someone who's actually on your side.

At Wellingborough Dental & Implant Clinic, we believe that good general dental care is the foundation of everything. It's how problems get caught before they become expensive. It's how people who haven't been to the dentist in years find their way back without dread. And it's how a family in Wellingborough, Rushden or Northamptonshire gets the kind of consistent, honest care that keeps smiles healthy for decades.

Here's what you can expect from general dentistry with us.

What does a dental check-up include?

A check-up is more thorough than most people realise. It's not just a quick look in your mouth and a note to come back in six months.

At each appointment, your dentist will examine every tooth individually, checking for signs of decay, cracks, wear, and any other changes since your last visit. They'll look at the condition of existing fillings, crowns, or other restorations you might have. They'll assess your gums for signs of gum disease, check the soft tissues of your mouth for anything unusual, and carry out a mouth cancer screening, which takes only a minute or two and should be done at every check-up.

X-rays are taken periodically, not at every single visit, but regularly enough to spot problems between teeth or below the gumline that aren't visible to the naked eye. We use digital X-rays, which use a fraction of the radiation of older film-based technology.

Throughout the appointment, your dentist will explain what they're seeing in plain language. If there's something that needs attention, they'll tell you what it is, why it matters, and what your options are. If everything looks good, they'll tell you that too.

A new patient check-up at our Wellingborough clinic is £75. It includes photographs, X-rays and a thorough 40 to 45 minute assessment, which gives us a proper picture of your dental health and a strong foundation to work from. It's a considerably more comprehensive introduction than the standard NHS check-up many patients have experienced elsewhere.

How often should I come for a check-up?

This varies from person to person. The traditional answer of "every six months" is a reasonable starting point for most healthy adults, but it's not a fixed rule. Some patients need to be seen more frequently because they're at higher risk of decay or gum disease. Others are in such good condition that an annual check-up is perfectly appropriate.

After your first appointment with us, your dentist will give you a personal recommendation based on what they find. We'd rather see you as often as your mouth actually needs, not more frequently than necessary.

Fillings: what to expect

Fillings are one of the most common general dental treatments. When decay reaches the inner part of a tooth, leaving it untreated means the decay spreads, eventually reaching the nerve, which is when things become painful and more complicated.

A filling removes the decayed material and fills the space with a suitable material to restore the tooth's shape and function. We use tooth-coloured composite resin fillings as standard, which look natural and bond directly to the tooth structure, meaning less healthy teeth need to be removed compared to older amalgam (silver) fillings.

The process is usually straightforward. Local anaesthetic means you won't feel any pain during treatment, though you may feel some pressure or vibration. After the anaesthetic wears off, mild soreness for a day or two is normal.

If you have old amalgam fillings that are failing, cracked, or that you'd like to have replaced for aesthetic reasons, we can discuss replacing them with tooth-coloured alternatives.

Root canal treatment: separating myth from reality

Root canal treatment has an unfair reputation. Patients often expect it to be the worst thing that happens to them in a dental chair. The reality, with modern anaesthesia and technique, is that it's usually no more uncomfortable than a standard filling.

Root canal treatment (or endodontic treatment, to use the clinical term) becomes necessary when the nerve inside a tooth becomes infected or damaged, usually as a result of deep decay, a crack, or injury. If left untreated, the infection can spread and the tooth will almost certainly be lost.

The treatment involves removing the infected nerve tissue from inside the tooth's root canals, cleaning and shaping the canals, and sealing them to prevent further infection. The tooth is then usually crowned to protect it, because a tooth without a nerve becomes more brittle over time.

We'd always rather save a natural tooth than extract it, and root canal treatment is often the right way to do that. If your dentist recommends it, it's because they believe the tooth is worth keeping.

Tooth extractions: when they're necessary and what to expect

Extraction is always a last resort at our Wellingborough practice. If a tooth can be saved, we will explore every option before recommending removal.

That said, sometimes extraction is the right decision: when a tooth is so badly decayed or broken that it can't be restored, when there's severe gum disease that has destroyed too much of the supporting bone, or in preparation for orthodontic treatment.

When extraction is necessary, we'll carry out the procedure under local anaesthetic so the area is completely numb. You'll feel pressure during the procedure but no sharp pain. Aftercare instructions will be provided, and if the missing tooth needs replacing, we'll discuss your options, including dental implants, which we specialise in at Wellingborough Dental & Implant Clinic.

Gum disease treatment

Gum disease is extremely common and one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults. The early stage, gingivitis, causes gum inflammation, bleeding when brushing, and sometimes bad breath. The later stage, periodontitis, involves the gradual breakdown of the bone and tissue that support your teeth.

The good news is that both stages can be treated. Gingivitis often responds very well to a thorough professional clean and improved home care. Periodontitis requires more intensive treatment, usually involving deep cleaning below the gumline (a process called scaling and root planing) and sometimes specialist input.

At our Wellingborough clinic, we take gum health seriously as part of every check-up. If we identify signs of gum disease, we won't gloss over them. We'll explain what stage you're at, what treatment is needed, and what you can do at home to support the process.

Mouth cancer screening: why we check every time

Mouth cancer is not talked about enough. It's one of the few cancers that is increasing in incidence, and outcomes are significantly better when it's caught early. Roughly two thirds of mouth cancers are diagnosed at a late stage, often because the early signs are subtle and easy to miss.

At each check-up, your dentist will examine your lips, cheeks, tongue, floor of the mouth, roof of the mouth and throat for any signs of abnormality, including unusual patches, persistent ulcers, lumps or changes in tissue colour. If anything looks unusual, we'll refer you promptly.

The screening takes a matter of minutes. Please don't skip it.

Nervous patients are very welcome

If you haven't been to the dentist in a long time because of anxiety, you are far from unusual. Dental anxiety affects a significant proportion of adults, and it often means people put off care until a small problem has become a bigger one.

We've built our practice around making nervous patients feel comfortable. Our team will never rush you, lecture you, or make you feel judged. We'll work at your pace. If treatment feels overwhelming, we offer IV sedation, which allows you to be in a deeply relaxed state throughout the appointment with no memory of the procedure afterwards.

We also have a quiet, calm clinical environment. The difference between a cold, clinical space and a welcoming one matters more than many practices realise.

If dental anxiety is something you're dealing with, please mention it when you call or book. We'll make a note and make sure everyone you encounter is aware from the start.

Frequently asked questions about general dentistry

How much does a check-up cost at Wellingborough Dental & Implant Clinic?

Our new patient check-up is priced at £75, which includes photographs, X-rays and a thorough 40 to 45 minute appointment. Follow-up check-ups are priced separately; ask the team for current fees when you book.

I haven't been to the dentist in several years. What will happen at my first appointment?

The same as any other check-up, but we'll take a bit more time to build up a full picture of your dental health. We won't make you feel bad about the gap. Our job is to understand where things are now and put together a plan to get you to where you want to be.

Do you see children for general dentistry?

Yes, we care for patients of all ages. We're a genuinely family-friendly practice and we take a warm, patient approach with younger patients. Good dental habits from an early age make a real difference throughout life.

Is it possible to get same-week appointments?

We try to accommodate new patients as quickly as possible. Call us on 01933 558733 or book online and we'll find the earliest available slot.

What's the difference between NHS and private general dentistry?

At a fully private practice like ours, appointments are longer, there are no waiting lists, and the range of materials and treatments available is broader. We use tooth-coloured fillings as standard, carry out thorough mouth cancer screening, and spend the time to give you a comprehensive picture of your dental health. NHS dentistry provides an important safety net, but for patients who want consistent, unhurried, personalised care, private dentistry offers a meaningfully different experience.

‍Take the first step. Call us on 01933 558733 or book a new patient check-up online. We're open Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm and Saturdays from 8am to 5pm, and we're always welcoming new patients from Wellingborough and the surrounding area.
